AUBURN, Ala. – Three Auburn swimmers were recognized by the SEC in their weekly awards Tuesday following their performance at the Auburn Invitational over the weekend.
Sophomores Mikkel Gadgaard and Meghan Lee were both named SEC Swimmer of the Week while Avery Bargeron took home SEC Freshman of the Week. It's the first Swimmer of the Week honor for either team since Claire Fisch in October 2019.
Gadgaard won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the Auburn Invitational and picked up three NCAA B cuts. The sophomore, who already holds the school record in the 500 free, moved up into a tie for sixth all-time in Auburn history in the 200 free with a time of 1:34.12. His 500 free time from the meet, 4:16.30, is fifth-fastest in the SEC this season.
Gadgaard also made a B-cut with a personal best 53.60 in a time trial for the 100 breaststroke.
Lee, the SEC Co-Swimmer of the Week on the women's side, earned three NCAA B cuts over the weekend as well and moved into Auburn's all-time top 10 in both the 200 backstroke and 200 IM. Her 200 back time of 1:53.00 is third-fastest in the SEC this season and puts her at seventh-fastest in Auburn history.
All four swims from Lee – 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM and the 50 back split to lead off the team's 200 medley relay – were new personal bests.
It was an impressive weekend for Bargeron as well as the freshman set personal bests in the 100 and 200 butterfly with times currently among the top 10 in the SEC. She moved into eighth place all-time at Auburn in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.99, and her time of 52.43 in the 100 fly made her ninth-fastest in program history. Both were NCAA B-cuts.
It was a fast weekend across the board at the Auburn Invitational as the Tigers gear up for the SEC Championships beginning next week in Knoxville, Tennessee. This year's meet will begin Tuesday, Feb. 15 and run through Saturday, Feb. 19.
