AUBURN, Ala. – Senior first baseman Sonny DiChiara has been named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week.
DiChiara is one of 15 players nationally to earn the distinction.
In four games last week, DiChiara turned in a .538/.611/1.462 slash line, going 8-for-13 with eight runs, three doubles, three homers and seven RBI.
The Hoover, Alabama, native started the week by going 2-for-2 with a double, home run and season-high four RBI in the home opener against Troy, his first home game at Plainsman Park. DiChiara followed it up by collecting a season-high three hits, including another double and home run, in the series opener against Yale. He homered for the third straight game the following day.
DiChiara is riding a seven-game hitting streak and has reached multiple times in all seven games. He reached safely in 11 of 12 plate appearances from Feb. 20-25 with the lone time he was put out coming on a sacrifice fly.
Through two weeks, the senior slugger leads the Southeastern Conference in doubles (six) and ranks top three in the league in average (.545), on-base percentage (.645), slugging (1.227), home runs (three) and total bases (27).
DiChiara and the Tigers play six games in six days this week, starting with a pair of in-state midweek contests against Alabama State Tuesday and UAB Wednesday.
