PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Senior Julie McCarthy came out red hot Sunday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge with back-to-back-to-back birdies on the first three holes. McCarthy made a total of six birdies on the day and fired a 3-under 68, matching her low round of the season (to par) from the opening round of the Moon Golf Invitational
McCarthy, who is playing as an individual for Auburn this week, is currently tied for second on the player leaderboard through the first round at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
As a team, the Tigers are tied for ninth overall after shooting a 297 (+13) on Sunday.
Anna Foster and Kaleigh Telfer led the way among those in the lineup with matching rounds of 73 (+2). Both players overcame a double bogey on the fourth hole and finished with three birdies on the day. Foster birdied two of her last three holes. The duo is tied for 25th after one round.
Junior Megan Schofill finished one stroke back, carding a 3-over 74. She made par on the entire front nine and added a birdie on the back nine. Coming off back-to-back top-20 finishes to start the spring, Schofill is in a tie for 29th with two rounds to play.
Mychael O'Berry and Elina Sinz are tied for 56th and 65th respectively. O'Berry shot a 77 (+6) in the first round while Sinz finished with a 78 (+7).
Kent State grabbed the early lead after round one at 2-over (286), followed by Oregon (287), Virginia (287), Duke (290), Arizona State (291), Wake Forest (292), Arizona (293), USC (295), Auburn (297), Texas (297), Pepperdine (297), Ohio State (298), Vanderbilt (301), California (304), Baylor (304) and Georgetown (321).
Auburn will tee off at 11 a.m. CT again Monday and will be paired with Ohio State, Pepperdine and Texas for the second round. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
