PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – After a slow start on the front nine, Auburn senior Julie McCarthy rallied on the back nine Monday with two birdies and an eagle to shoot a 73 (+1) in the second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
McCarthy, who fired a 68 (-3) in the first round, remained tied for second on the leaderboard at 2-under heading into the third and final round. She's playing as an individual this week.
McCarthy's eagle was one of two on the day for Auburn as sophomore Anna Foster also made an eagle on No. 14, a Par 4. Foster carded a 75 (+4) on Monday and dropped back into a tie for 38th overall through the first two rounds.
As a team, the Tigers shot 295 (+11) in the second round, improving on their first-round score by two strokes. They are currently in 11th place at 24-over.
Kaleigh Telfer and Megan Schofill are both in the top 30 individually after each finished with a 2-over 73 in the second round. Telfer is in a tie for 25th at 4-over while Schofill is one shot back (+5) and tied for 30th overall. Telfer made a team-high four birdies Monday.
Elina Sinz and Mychael O'Berry both improved from round one to round two. Sinz shot a 74 (+3) on Monday with a pair of birdies in the second round, and O'Berry carded a 76 (+5). Sinz is tied for 58th individually, and O'Berry is tied for 62nd.
Oregon took the team lead and is one of only two teams under par at 2-under (566), followed by Virginia (567), Wake Forest (572), Arizona State (575), Kent State (576), USC (582), Duke (582), Texas (587), Arizona (588), Baylor (591), Auburn (592), California (595), Vanderbilt (599), Pepperdine (599), Ohio State (600) and Georgetown (623).
It will be a shotgun format for the third round with all 16 teams teeing off at 10 a.m. CT from Palos Verdes Golf Club. Auburn will be paired with Arizona, Baylor and California in the final round. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
