In 1997, Auburn softball competed in its inaugural season. Throughout the 2022 campaign, we are celebrating the many faces, moments and victories that have shaped our program over the last 25 years.
As part of our 25 Years of Auburn Softball celebration, we're checking in with alumni from every era of the program to share their memories of being a Tiger.
Transferring from Radford to Auburn for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Rachael Walters was a key addition to the pitching staff that helped propel the Tigers to their 2015 and 2016 Women's College World Series appearances.
Q: Why did you decide to continue your softball career at Auburn?
Walters: From the moment I arrived at my visit, Auburn felt like home. I knew from the beginning that it was the right place for me to continue my softball career. I wanted to play for the best and be one of the best.
Q: What is your favorite on-field memory?
Walters: My favorite memory would be our second game against Oklahoma in the 2016 Women's College World Series Championship Series. Our comeback was like nothing else. We were relentless, and the energy in the stands was like nothing before. Talk about a walk-off grand slam!
Q: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment during your collegiate career – on or off the field?
Walters: The relationships I made and the self-growth that I had.
Q: What is one of your favorite memories with a teammate?
Walters: It's hard to choose just one. We all had many shared memories on and off the field!
Q: Looking back at your career, what is one word you'd use to describe it?
Walters: Incredible. Everything about my time with Auburn softball was incredible: the people, the school, the community, the fans, winning two SEC Tournaments, hosting regionals, hosting super regionals the WCWS … everything! I even met my husband at Auburn. I can't think of a better word to describe it!
Q: Who influenced your softball career the most?
Walters: My dad, Timmy.
Q: What was your favorite uniform combo?
Walters: Blue top, white pants, blue socks.
Q: Why advice would you give to current/future Auburn softball student-athletes?
Walters: Do your best and leave it all out there. However, don't take yourself too seriously. Your highs and lows in athletics do not define you as a person.
Q: If you can give a message to the Auburn Family, what would it be?
Walters: Thank you! Our historic run in 2015-2016 wouldn't have been possible without you. Your energy was electric and your support meant everything. You all made a world of difference at our games!
Q: What degree did you earn? What is your current career path?
Walters: My degree was in public administration. I currently work as a healthcare recruiter in Washington state.
