AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn junior Selin Ovunc has been named SEC Player of the Week for women's tennis, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Ovunc put together the best SEC weekend of her career in singles last week, earning two victories over top-15 opponents. Last Friday, she picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over South Carolina's No. 2-ranked Sarah Hamner, tying for the highest-ranked win of her career. She followed that up Sunday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Florida's No. 15-ranked McCartney Kessler, helping the 13th-ranked Tigers to a 6-1 win over No. 15 Florida, their first victory over the Gators in Gainesville in program history.
In doubles, she and partner Ariana Arseneault – ranked 12th nationally last week – were one point away from a win (5-4, 40-30) over the 30th-ranked tandem of Davies and Hamner from South Carolina when doubles play was halted. Ovunc and Arseneault are 7-1 in SEC play this season and have had two other matches halted while leading at match point.
This is the second weekly SEC honor of Ovunc's career; she was named SEC Freshman of the Week early in the 2020 season.
Ovunc and the Tigers will close out the 2022 regular season this weekend with a pair of home matches against Tennessee (3 p.m. Friday) and Georgia (noon Sunday).
