Three Auburn players have received bids to the NCAA individual championships in men's tennis. Tyler Stice will represent the Tigers in the 64-man singles field, while Tad Maclean and Finn Murgett are seeded in the 32-team doubles competition. All earned bids to last year's tournament as well.
Murgett and Maclean, the 2021 NCAA doubles runners-up, received a No. 5-8 seed for this year's doubles tournament, earning them All-America status for the second consecutive season. The duo is ranked No. 10 nationally with a 17-5 overall and 10-2 SEC record this spring.
Stice, a first-team all-SEC performer for the second consecutive year, is ranked No. 22 in singles, with a 14-9 overall record.
"It's an amazing achievement to play in the individual NCAA tennis championships," Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said. "Tyler has been a workhorse at the No. 1 position for his second straight year and had numerous victories over the best players in the country this spring. Having experience from competing last year in the singles tournament will be beneficial for his return this May.
"Tad and Finn have been a remarkable doubles team this spring. They have built upon last year's run to the NCAA doubles final, and I am confident they can do one match better this year."
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 19-22.
All matches in the individual championships shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Auburn is 20-10 for the spring season; this is Auburn's first 20-win season since 2002. After reaching the SEC tournament semifinals, the Tigers are ranked No. 24 in the latest ITA team ratings and No. 22 in the Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25.
The Tigers face No. 43 Texas Tech Friday in NCAA opening round team play at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
