EUGENE, Ore.—Auburn sophomore Kyle Brown and junior James Courson each earned their first all-America honors during day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Competing in his first nationals meet, sophomore Kyle Brown earned all-America honors after finishing 19th in the men's hammer throw. The Cummings, Georgia, native posted a mark of 66.59m/218-5 on his second of three attempts.
Courson, a pole vaulter also competing in his first NCAA outdoors, no heighted on three attempts at 5.15m/16-10¾. The Hoover, Alabama native and SEC outdoors silver medalists nearly cleared 5.15 on his second attempt, but just barely caught the bar as he pushed away from his pole.
Auburn senior Alex Spyridonidis withdrew from the decathlon after the third event on Wednesday after reaggravating a leg injury suffered earlier in the outdoor season. The NCAA Outdoor fifth place finisher a year ago, Spyridonidis ran in the 100 and completed the long jump and shot put events before exiting the competition.
Auburn's Thursday schedule at the NCAA Championships will feature six Tiger women competing, starting with Madi Malone in the hammer throw at 3 p.m. PT. Joyce Kimeli will be the first Tiger on the track, racing in the 3000m Steeplechase semifinals at 6:02 p.m. PT.
Javelin throwers Ashley Carter and Shaniya Holley will throw at 6:45 p.m. local time with Presley Weems and Asia Jinks racing in the semifinals of the 800 and 400 hurdles at 7:14 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
