ATLANTA, Ga. – It took an extra hole to decide who would move on to the finals on Tuesday at the prestigious East Lake Cup, but Auburn redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld's win on the 19th hole of play moved the Tigers into the finals match.
Weidenfeld was three holes down through 10 holes against Oregon's Cynthia Lu, then came roaring back with wins on holes 11 and 12, a loss on 14 and a wins on 16 and 17 to tie the match. After the match went to extra holes, Weidenfeld then parred the par-3 15th hole to take the match and secure the team victory.
"After being down early, I stayed committed to my process and was able to make a lot of birdies," the Pembroke Pines, Fla. native said after her round. "My nerves were a little high, but I was looking forward to the challenge of winning the deciding match."
Auburn senior Megan Schofill defeated Brittany Shin 6&5 in a match where Schofill holed out for eagle on her first hole of the day. Junior Anna Foster also posted a 4&2 match win over Ching-Tzu Chen and had three birdies on her card.
Junior Elina Sinz fell to Ashleigh Park 3&2 while freshman Rachel Gourley lost her match 6&4 to Briana Chacon.
"This team knows how to dig deep and showed true grit," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the matches concluded. "I talked to them last week about our culture and how we never give up. Casey's play today is a great example of never giving up.
