TEMPE, Ariz. - The Auburn women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of play at the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday.
Junior Adeline Flach and freshman Kaitlyn Carnicella took down Marianna Argyrokastriti and Rachel Hanford from host school Arizona State 6-2 in the Tiger duo's only doubles match of the day.
It was a challenging day for Auburn in singles as they fell in all three matches that were played on Friday. Junior Anastasia Astakhova fell to Makenna Thiel from California, Flach lost to Ohio State's Danielle Willson, and Carnicella was defeated by Lucia Marzal from Ohio State.
"I saw a lot of improvement in doubles today. We played aggressive, controlling the middle and hunting volleys," Tigers head coach Caroline Lilley said after day one. "When we had opportunities in singles we lacked an identity. As a coach, I have to do a better job of providing a clear plan we can stay resolutely committed to. When we faced adversity, I don't think we responded with the fight and grit that have becoming defining characteristics of our team. We are better competitors than we chose to be today, and we will dig deep to improve for tomorrow."
On Saturday, Auburn will be back in action for day two of the Thunderbird Invitational beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the event will be avaliable here.
