Alumni Spotlight: Walton Ashwander

Alumni Spotlight: Walton AshwanderAlumni Spotlight: Walton Ashwander

In the fall of 1947, Auburn announced the creation of its men's golf program. Throughout the 2022-23 season, we are remembering and honoring the milestone moments and outstanding alumni that make up the illustrious 75-year history of the program.

A native of Hartselle, Alabama, Walton Ashwander spent four seasons on The Plains, lettering in each, and helping the Tigers to the 1981 SEC Championship.

Q: Why did you choose to continue your golf career at Auburn?
Ashwander: My family has been an Auburn family forever and going to Auburn was all I ever wanted to do. A neat fact is that our family has been football season ticket holders for 65 years. In fact, we've held the same 10 seats the entire time.

Q: What would you consider your biggest accomplishment during your time in college?
Ashwander: There are so many. That's a tough one, but probably our 1981 SEC Championship.

Q: How would you describe your experience in a single word?
Ashwander: Life-changing.

Q: What is your favorite memory from Auburn?
Ashwander: Just being a part of the Auburn family first and foremost. Receiving our SEC Championship rings has to be up there as well.

Q: What degree did you earn and what are you up to now?
Ashwander: I finished my degree closer to home at Athens State College. I got my BS in business management. Now, I am a manager of asphalt division for a large civil contractor called SJ&L General Contractors in Huntsville, Alabama.

Q: Do you still play golf? In what fashion?
Ashwander: I play some, mainly with my sons and charity events along with Auburn fundraisers.

Q: What advice would you give to current and future members of the Auburn golf team?
Ashwander: Don't take the opportunity you have been given for granted.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add regarding your time with Auburn golf?
Ashwander: Auburn gave me wonderful memories and great teammates. I'm proud to be an Auburn Tiger for life. War Eagle!
