AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn throws team will return to competition to officially begin the Tigers' first indoor season under the helm of head coach Leroy Burrell at the UW Early Bird Invitational Saturday, Dec. 8 in Oshkosh, Wis.
"Really excited to get the year started," Auburn Head Coach Leroy Burrell said. "One of the strongest groups on the team, if not the strongest group is kicking it off for us and setting the tone for the balance of the season."
Kickstarting the action for the Tigers from the Kolf Sports Center will be the women's shot put at 11:30 a.m. CT.
Among those returning to action for the throws squad are school record-holder and First Team All-American Madi Malone and SEC medalist and Second Team All-SEC member Kyle Brown, as well as Erik Ebel, Maura Huwalt and Kyle Moison.
"We talked about just being competitive, knocking the rust off and learning how to compete again," Auburn throws coach Pat Ebel said. "I think it will be very competitive in nature and the meet usually lends itself to having great performances."
On the women's side, Malone returns from breaking the school record just a season ago. She set school and facility records with a 22.31m throw at Texas Tech Open only to rebreak the record a week later at the USA Jaguar Invite with a 23.32m throw. Malone finished fifth at the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships and eighth at NCAA Indoor Championships to earn first team All-America honors.
On the men's side, Brown leads the charge after winning bronze and scoring six points for Auburn at the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships with a top mark of 21.52m. After being named Second Team All-SEC, Brown became the first Auburn man to medal in weight throw since 2008. He looks to improve on his PR of 21.69m set at the Texas Tech Open last January.
