AUBURN, Ala. – Following a career-best decathlon performance last week at Texas Relays, Auburn track & field senior Alex Spyridonidis has been named SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
The honor is the fourth of the year for the Tigers and the second of the early outdoor season.
Spyridonidis accumulated 7,917 total points throughout the decathlon to surpass his previous career best by nearly 250 points and post the No. 2 mark in the world. The Hanover, Germany product was aided by PRs in five of his 10 events, long jump, high jump, 110m hurdles, the 400m and the 1500m.
With, 7,917 points, Spyridonidis also records the third-best point total in school history and the highest since Maurice Smith in 2004.
Spyridonidis and the Tigers will return to action later this week, March 31 – April 2, at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida.
