It's time to meet the Auburn equestrian freshman class as we bring you Q&As with the newcomers.
Our next feature is Charlotte McLaughlin! The Ottawa, Ontario product is a Jumping Seat rider working on a degree with the School of Architecture.
Q: Why Auburn?
A: "I remember visiting Auburn as a little girl and setting a goal for myself to one day represent Auburn equestrian."
What is your major and what do you hope to do with it after college?
"I am currently a Pre-Building Science Major. In the future, I would love to work with my father and brother for our construction company, Terlin Construction, located in my hometown of Ottawa, Canada."
What is your favorite Auburn tradition so far?
"Despite being a Canadian, one of my favourite Auburn traditions is the military flyover that takes place during the National Anthem at all of Auburn's football games. Watching my community honouring our men and women in service brings me great pride considering my grandfather and his father served in the Canadian Military."
What are you most excited about this season?
"Auburn equestrian is truly a sisterhood, and I am most excited to continue to grow my relationships with my teammates."
How are you managing being on the equestrian team and your class load?
"Being a student-athlete is not easy and is not for the faint of heart, but in my opinion, it is worth every bead of sweat. Reminding myself of this privilege is what motivates me to stay focused and keep fighting."
What is your favorite thing to do in Auburn?
"I really enjoy the early morning walks that my roommate, Alexis, and I take on Saturdays. Campus is always so quiet and peaceful, and we use that time to take a minute to appreciate the beautiful school we attend."
What was your favorite class you took this past semester?
"Introduction to Construction with Professor Redden was my favourite class this semester. I really enjoyed learning more about the construction industry as a whole and am eager to get into the nitty gritty of it all."
What horse is your favorite to ride for Auburn?
"Haja would have to be my favourite horse to ride. She is so kind, always gives it her all, and is adorable too!"
What is your favorite memory with the equestrian team thus far?
"My favourite memory thus far is the bus ride home from our victory at Georgia. It was the very first meet of the season and we were so excited to have come out with the win."
What does 'War Eagle' mean to you?
"'War Eagle' is more than just a battle cry. When I say it out loud, I have a deep sense of pride and it's a reminder that I am part of something bigger than myself: the Auburn Family."
Your favorite thing about your hometown?
"Ottawa is Canada's capital city and truly a beautiful place to be. My favourite aspect of the city is the Rideau Canal which flows through our downtown core. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and serves as a 7.8-kilometer-long skating rink in the winter."
What are some key differences you've noticed between Canada and the US?
"Canadians are famous for being nice; however, nothing compares to Southern Hospitality. Another key difference is that the United States has mastered the art of BBQ and fried chicken, although that can't compete with Canada's delicacy, poutine. Finally, and probably the most noticeable difference, is that you all say "y'all" and I have a habit of saying "Eh" at the end of most sentences."
What do you think your dream job would be after obtaining a degree in building science?
"My dream would be to work with my family for our construction company as a Project Manager and perhaps take it over one day. I have grown up around the business and have always loved watching them work. I can't wait to someday work alongside them. Horses have also always been a part of my life and will continue to be. How that unfolds I am unsure… only the big guy knows!"
