You may have heard the story of James Owens and Thom Gossom. They were the first African American Football players at Auburn. Harold Franklin was the first Black student on the Auburn campus. Bessie Mae Holloway was the first African American to serve on the Auburn University Board of Trustees. Wendell Merritt was the Black female student-athlete at Auburn. She came from Colquitt, Georgia to play basketball for Jan Pylant in 1977. 

In November, the James Owens Foundation sponsored a breakfast for Auburn's first decade of Black Student-Athletes. Jeff Shearer, with AuburnTigers.com, wrote a story about Merritt's time on the Plains
