SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 13 Auburn fell to No. 11 Ohio State on Friday during the first round of the ITA National Indoor Championship in Seattle by a 4-0 final score.
"Ohio State was the better team today," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said after the match. "I liked our intent, we were doing the right things and earning what we wanted, our execution just wasn't quite good enough. As the leader of this program, it is entirely my responsibility to prepare our team to capitalize and sprint through the finish line. Our time in Seattle is just beginning and one thing I know for certain is that we coach the most resilient team here."
Ohio State got off to a good start after taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. No. 37 Sydni Ratliff and Irina Cantos Siemers upset No. 8 Ariana Arseneault and Carolyn Ansari 6-4 on court one while Koli Allen and Danielle Willson took down DJ Bennett and Kaitlyn Carnicella on court three.
Auburn was defeated in two sets on courts three, four and five which led to the Ohio State victory. Ansari came back from being down 4-0 to win set one in a tiebreaker and was leading the second set 5-3 over No. 23 Cantos Siemers when the match on court two was suspended. After dropping the first set to No. 17 Ratliff, Arseneault won the second set 6-2 and was leading the third set 1-0 when the match on court one was suspended.
On Saturday, Auburn will face the loser of the match between No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 17 San Diego at 11:00 a.m. CT. A live stream and live stats of Auburn's match at the Seattle Tennis Center will be available on the ITA's official website, wearecollegetennis.com.
