AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn track & field is set to compete in the FSU Relays March 23 – 24 at the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Florida.
"I am just excited that we have a prospect of really good weather, in Tallahassee," Tigers head coach Leroy Burrell said. "And I am really excited to see some of our other athletes open up."
Highlighting the team's outdoor opener at the Tiger Track Classic was discus thrower Maura Huwalt who threw 56.34m/184-10 to break her own school record and post the nation's number four mark.
The rest of the Auburn throws squad also came out ready to compete, setting 11 new personal-best marks. Alongside Huwalt in the women's discus, freshman Megan Hague (43.26m/141-11) and sophomore Trinity Love (42.08m/138-00) had strong outings.
In the hammer throw, senior Erik Ebel took the top spot with a 66.58m/218-05 performance followed by Kyle Moison in second with a toss of 63.84m/209-05. In his first outdoor season in an Auburn uniform, freshman John Leonard threw a personal best 52.84m/173-04 to take eighth.
In the men's pole vault, senior Matthew Asplund finished second, clearing a new personal-best mark of 5.15m/16-10.75, which ranks tenth in the NCAA this season and sithx in Auburn history.
On the running side, freshman Abasiono Akpan captured to the 400m hurdles title in her first hurdle race of the year. Chante Clinkscale picked up a pair of personal bests in the women's 100m (11.42) and 200m (23.56) to finish first and second in the events.
The women's 1500m invite saw three new personal best from senior Hannah Tarwater (4:34.69), sophomore Hannah Thuss (4:38.66) and freshman Hailey Marston (4:39.86) to all finish inside the top ten. Male Tigers crossing the line inside the top ten in the event include junior Carson Bedics (3:56.50) and freshman Joseph Perry (3:57.52). Perry's time marks a new personal best in his outdoor season debut.
The 4x400m relays closed out the weekend strong with the women in first and the men in second. Akpan, Ariel Sharpe, Amirah Sharpe and Ashantae Harvey combined efforts to cross the line in 3:41.49 while on the men's side, Luke Roberts, Matthew Rainer, John Stephens, and Mo Mpoke ran 3:15.53.
Women's hammer throw will kickstart competition at the FSU Relays on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT while the men's 5,000m will conclude the events at 7:30 p.m. CT. Action will resume Friday at with the women's discus throw at 9:30 a.m. CT and end with the men's 4x400m relay at 1:50 p.m. CT.
