AUBURN, Ala. – Making the trip to one of college track's most esteemed events, Auburn track & field is set to compete in the 95th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays March 29 – April 1 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
"This has been a process of figuring out who we are, what we can do and who is going to step up for us," Tigers head coach Leroy Burrell said. "We are looking for as many athletes as possible to put themselves in position to compete at the conference and national level."
The Tigers look to carry some positive momentum into Austin after a successful meet last weekend at the FSU Relays. The senior duo of Madi Malone and Dontavious Hill each claimed wins in their respective events while also solidifying national-leading marks in the hammer throw and high jump.
Malone's top toss came on her final attempt as she launched for 68.79/225-8, less than three feet shy of a personal best and school record. Hill's breakthrough clearance came on his 11th jump as he surpassed 2.24m/7-4.25 to lock down the win and a new outdoor best. Following his efforts in Tallahassee, Hill was rewarded as the SEC's Field Athlete of the Week.
Senior Maura Huwalt joined into on the dominant field action with a had a pair of strong performances in the shot put and discus. Huwalt finished second in shot, throwing 16.35m/53-7.75, then followed with a third-place toss in the discus, heaving one out 54.66m/179-4 to become No. 3 all-time in school history.
On the running side, the Tiger 400m runners swept first through fourth place at Florida State. Junior Ashantae Harvey took the top spot in 53.21 seconds followed by freshmen Arianna Sharpe (53.28), Amirah Sharpe (53.37) and Abasiono Akpan (54.26).
In the men's 100m dash, freshman Azeem Fahmi impressed in his season debut, clocking a 10.32 to earn gold. Fellow first-year, Chante Clinkscale impressed for the running squad as well, winning the women's 100m dash in a new career-best 11.33 seconds.
A total of 29 Auburn student-athletes will compete throughout the week. Multis events will kickstart competition on Wednesday while the women's hammer throw will begin field events Thursday at 11 a.m. CT. The women's 400m hurdle prelims will begin the running events Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
