AUSTIN, Texas – In his collegiate debut, freshman Keyshawn Strachan rewrote the history books Friday at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
On his second attempt of the competition, Strachan launched one out 84.27m/276-5 for a new lifetime best. He surpasses Cade Antonucci's school record of 76.14m/249-10 and Justin Carter's freshman record of 73.03/239-7 with ease. The 19-year-old threw a world and national leading mark by over 10 meters and ranks number four in NCAA history.
A native of the Bahamas, Strachan came to The Plains with a NACAC U23 Championship silver medal and World U20 Championship bronze medal to his name. He broke his own Bahama national record of 79.89m/262.
Junior Ashantae Harvey, Niya Benton-Andrews, and Janaya Jones, and freshman Chante Clinkscale combined efforts in the women's 4x100m relay clocking 46.45. Their season-best time was good for second place in the timed finals section just behind USTA at 46.24.
Later Harvey anchored the 4x400m relay in 52.64 to win the heat and automatically qualify to Saturday night's final. Harvey, along with freshmen Abasiono Akpan, Arianna Sharpe and Amirah Sharpe crossed the line in 3:35.07, the seventh fastest time in the country this season.
From the field, senior Amy Warren leaped out 12.97m/42-6.75 on her third attempt for a new wind legal personal best. Her mark was good for fifth overall in section B.
The final day of competition for the Tigers will begin Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT with the women's high jump. The women's 4x400m relay final will cap off the weekend at 4:40 p.m. CT.
