BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn will begin its 2023 postseason on Wednesday at the SEC Championship at Greystone Golf & Country Club's Legacy Course in Birmingham, Alabama. For the fifth consecutive year, the event will feature three rounds of stroke play on Wednesday through Friday with the top eight teams advancing to three rounds of match play on Saturday and Sunday.
"Last year we were the stroke play champions and that felt really good," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "In golf, you want to take it one day at a time and you have to know where you want to end up. This team feels good about their talent and how they're playing right now so I think that they expect to have a very good SEC Championship."
The Tigers enter the championship after winning their most recent team event at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia. The team finished the regular season schedule with two wins and eight top five finishes. Auburn's head-to-head record is currently 73-25 overall and 24-12 against Southeastern Conference opponents.
The Tigers' lone senior, Megan Schofill, will aim to continue her impressive play after posting a top-15 finish at the Augusta National Women's Amateur earlier this month. Schofill completed the event at the infamous course with the second-best finish ever by an Auburn golfer in a tie for 14th place.
In collegiate tournaments this season, the Monticello, Florida native leads the team in scoring average at 71.48 as well as rounds under par with 10. Schofill also broke the program record during the Tigers' last team event for most rounds under par in a career and continues to hold the program's lowest career scoring average at 72.13 (minimum 60 rounds).
Junior Elina Sinz will enter her second SEC Championship on Wednesday after capturing the first individual title of her college career at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Sinz finished the tournament with a 36-hole score of 139 (-5) to best the field by one stroke and received SEC Player of the Week honors for her impressive play.
All Southeastern Conference schools will be competing in the first three rounds before the field is slashed to the top eight for match play. Eight of the 14 teams in the conference are currently ranked in the Golfstat top-25, including No. 3 LSU, No. 4 South Carolina and No. 5 Mississippi State. The SEC has more schools represented in the top-25 than any other conference in the nation.
Auburn won the stroke play portion of the SEC Championship last season after shooting 864 (E) last season before ultimately falling in the match play semifinals. The year before that in 2021, the Tigers claimed their 10th SEC Championship in program history after shutting out Mississippi State 5-0-0 in the match play finals. The program's 10 championships are the second-most of any school in the league.
The Tigers will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT alongside players from Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Live scoring of the championship will be available online at Golfstat.com and the Golfstat mobile app.
