Tigers fall to South Carolina in SEC Championship quarterfinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 7 Auburn fell in a close match to No. 4 South Carolina by a 3-2 score in the match play quarterfinal round of the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday.
 
Redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld got off to a quick 2-up lead through three holes including a birdie on No. 3. Weidenfeld extended her lead with another birdie on No. 7 and eventually won the match 5&3 over Justine Fournand with a sand save for par on No. 15. The match win marks her third match play victory of the season, as she recorded two match play wins during the East Lake Cup in October.
 
Senior Megan Schofill, who finished as the individual runner-up on Friday, fell in her match to Hannah Darling 5&4. Junior Anna Foster fought back to tie her match after losing the first two holes of the day, but ultimately lost to Mia Lussand 4&3.
 
Redshirt freshman Carys Worby had a great front nine in her match against Mathilde Claisse, as she posted wins on No. 1, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 9 to build a 3-up lead at the turn in her first collegiate round of match play. Claisse ultimately won the match on the back nine 3&1. Claisse's match win clinched the team victory for South Carolina.
 
Freshman Katie Cranston, in her first collegiate round of match play, came back from being 2-down through five holes to tie the match before the back nine. Cranston then picked up three consecutive wins on No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 to take a 3-up lead. The freshman was leading Louise Rydqvist 1-up on the 18th hole when the match was ended.
 
Selections for the 2023 NCAA women's golf regionals will be announced on April 26th.
