The first time Lou Cella's statues were unveiled at Auburn University he couldn't attend. You see, Cella broke his leg in a golf cart accident. When the Frank Thomas statue was revealed last week at Plainsman Park, a healthy Lou Cella was there. It wasn't the first Frank Thomas statue Cella was commissioned to sculp. He crafted the Big Hurt at then Comiskey Park.
His first three Auburn statues reside at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The statues for Pat Dye, Shug Jordan & Cliff Hare were dedicated in October of 2021. He's worked on Harry Caray and Ernie Banks at Wrigley Field in Chicago and even the popcorn king, Orville Redenbacher, in Valparaiso, Indiana.
