PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— Senior Mo Mpoke won the men's 400m hurdles championship on the first day at the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus, Thursday.
Mpoke led the way for the Tiger's with a first-place finish in the college men's 400m hurdles championship race clocking 49.81 to finish just ahead of UConn's Wellington Ventura at 50.55. On the women's side, freshman Abasiono Akpan took fifth place in the college women's 400m hurdles championship crossing the line in 57.39.
In the field, senior Madi Malone finished second in the college women's hammer throw championship. On her final throw of the competition, Malone hit her furthest throw of 66.93m/219-7.
On the men's side, senior Kyle Brown threw 65.56m/215-1 in the college men's hammer throw championship to finish fifth. Teammates Kyle Moison (65.66m/215-0) and Erik Ebel (65.46m/214-8) were not far behind in sixth and seventh place respectively.
In a stacked field, freshman Gene Coetzee ran 4:27.50 in the college women's 1500m championship, just .27 off her personal best.
Day two for Auburn will begin at 11:10 a.m. CT with the college men's distance medley relay.
