LOS ANGELES – Auburn's Megan Schofill has qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur championship match after defeating University of Michigan's Hailey Borja 2&1 in Saturday's semifinal round. Schofill will face Latanna Stone of LSU in the final beginning at 11:45 a.m. CT on Sunday.
"I'm really thankful for the golf I've played so far regardless of the outcome tomorrow," Schofill said after the semifinal match victory. "It's been a great week and I'm really thankful for all of the support from back home."
The Monticello, Florida native started off the match strong with wins on the first and third holes to take an early 2-up lead. Borja fought back to tie the match through No. 6 before Schofill won the seventh hole to take a 1-up lead.
The two then halved the next five consecutive holes before Borja then tied the match again with a birdie on the 13th hole. Schofill got the momentum back with a crucial eagle on the par-5 No. 14 at Bel-Air Golf Club to reclaim a 1-up advantage.
"Luckly, I hit a high cut into the right-to-left wind and it landed soft," Schofill said about her approach on No. 14. "I felt like that hole switched the match. I hit three great shots there and was able to keep the momentum going into 15 and 16."
Following the eagle, Schofill won the following hole and ultimately took the match 2&1.
After posting a 4-under 136 in the stroke play portion of the event to advance to match play, Schofill posted match play victories over Jackie Rogowicz, Kelly Xu and Caitlin Peirce. In Friday's quarterfinal round, the Monticello, Florida native won a tightly contested 2&1 match over Anna Davis, who holds a World Amateur Golf Ranking of 5th, prior to defeating Borja on Saturday.
Schofill and Stone will tee it up for a 36-hole match to decide the 123rd U.S. Amateur Champion at 11:45 a.m. CT. Coverage of the final will begin at 6 p.m. CT on Golf Channel. Live scoring of the championship match will also be available online at USGA.org.
