BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After leading the Tigers to a pair of thrilling victories in stroke play and match play at the SEC Fall Preview last week, Auburn men's golfer Jackson Koivun was rewarded as the league's top rookie of the week, the Southeastern Conference office announced Wednesday.
Koivun is the SEC Freshman of the Week for the first time in his tenure. Last time out, Koivun became the first Auburn freshman to capture overall player of the week.
At the SEC Fall Preview, Koivun ended stroke play as the highest-placing freshman with a 9-under on his scorecard. He finished tied for sixth and has now finished inside the top 10 of each of the falls' opening two events. In match play, the Chapel Hill, North Carolina native made a massive statement by toppling the No. 1 amateur golfer in the world, Gordon Sargent, on the 19th hole of their respective match to add a crucial point on the board for Auburn that ultimately led its 3-2 triumph over No. 7 Vanderbilt.
Up next, the No. 2 Tigers tee off in The Williams Cup presented by STITCH. Eagle Point Golf Club hosts the event Oct. 9-10.
