CARY, N.C. - Auburn's Carolyn Ansari has earned a spot in the ITA All-American Championshps singles main draw consolation finals after defeating No. 23 Savannah Broadus on Saturday morning. At the ITA Southern Regional Championships, Kaitlyn Carnicella picked up a couple of wins, one singles victory and one doubles victory with Ava Esposito Cogan, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"Deliberate practice is something we will continue to embrace as a team," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said after both events ended on Saturday. "We played some really competitive matches today. The fight was evident and the execution will improve with time."
Ansari, the 22nd ranked singles player in the nation, defeated Broadus of Pepperdine in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-3 at Cary Tennis Park. After dropping her first match in the main draw, Ansari has won three consecutive singles matches to reach the consolation finals.
At the ITA Southern Regionals, Kaitlyn Carnicella began the day with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 comeback victory over Alabama's Priya Nelson in the main draw. In the main draw round of 16, Carnicella lost to Ava Hrastar of Ole Miss in three sets. Carnicella teamed up with Ava Esposito Cogan and defeated NWSU's Sara Erenda and Sofia Garcia in the opening round of the doubles main draw 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-1.
On Sunday, Ansari will play in the consolation final match against No. 8 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. CT at ITA All-Americans while Carnicella and Cogan will face South Alabama's Manal Ennaciri and Otoha Aoki at 2 p.m. CT.
