With the fall semester winding down, Auburn softball is making the most of its time on campus before the holiday break with its final practices. We continue to spotlight one of the newcomers to the program that hopes to help carry 2023's momentum into a new season.
Chalea Clemmons, a Thompson High School graduate, makes her collegiate debut next spring. Experienced when competing at the highest levels of the game, the left-handed pitcher and threat at the plate was named the Most Valuable Player after leading Thompson to the 7A State Championship game.
Q: Why did you decide to commit to Auburn softball?
Clemmons: The atmosphere here at Auburn is surreal! The people are phenomenal, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Q: What advice would give your younger self?
Clemmons: Failure is an opportunity to grow. Don't spend too much time worrying about what you did wrong but focus on what you accomplished.
Q: How old were you when you started playing softball? What are your earliest memories of playing?
Clemmons: I started playing around four years old. My earliest softball memories are spending time with my family at the field or batting cages, and my siblings and I all working to get better.
Q: What has been the highlight of your softball career thus far?
Clemmons: Winning the state championship game with my THS (Thompson High School) softball family in 2022.
Q: What makes Auburn softball special?
Clemmons: The girls and coaches make this place special. The girls are already like my sisters, and we are all here for each other no matter what. The coaches are always going to push you to be your best, but they also will laugh and cut up with you which takes a lot of pressure off at this level.
Q: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
Clemmons: I always pray and listen to some worship music before a game. It helps calm the nerves and helps me realize how blessed I am to be able to play the game.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Clemmons: Teleportation. I'd much rather be able to snap my fingers and appear somewhere than drive several hours.
Q: What's your major? What do you plan to do with your degree?
Clemmons: Biomedical sciences. I plan to go into optometry or somewhere in the medical field.
Q: What is your favorite holiday?
Clemmons: Christmas! I love getting to spend time with my family, and the food is always amazing.
Q: What's on word you'd use to describe yourself on the field and one word to describe yourself off the field?
Clemmons: One word I would use to describe myself on the field is passionate. I will always give my all and take everything personal. I will always work hard and continue to better myself. Off the field, I'd describe myself as dedicated. Whether it's church, softball, relationships, family or school, I'm always going to be devoted towards it.
Q: If you could give a message to the Auburn Family about the upcoming season, what would to be?
Clemmons: We work our tails off every day, and we aren't done yet! Be ready for us this season…WDE!
