INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time of his career, Auburn sophomore forward Johni Broome (Plant City, Fla.) was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Men's All-District IV Team, in a vote by its national membership on Tuesday.
The All-Southeastern Conference Second Team selection made an immediate impact in his first season on the Plains. Broome solidified himself as one of the top players in the league averaging 14.0 points (14th in SEC), 8.4 rebounds (3rd in SEC) and nine double-doubles (3rd in SEC). He currently ranks No. 11 nationally averaging 2.3 blocks per game and has tallied double figures in 26-of-31 games played for the Tigers.
Broome is making his second NCAA Tournament appearance this week. He previously faced West Virginia as a true freshman at Morehead State in the opening round of the 2021 tournament. Broome enters postseason play on a team-leading seven-game double-digit scoring streak.
He was joined on the All-District IV Team by Colin Castleton of Florida, Kendric Davis of Memphis, Brandon Miller of Alabama, Liam Robbins of Vanderbilt, Tolu Smith of Mississippi State, Oscar Tshiebwe of Kentucky, Santiago Vescovi of Tennessee, Isaiah Wong of Miami (Fla.) and Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee.
For each of the nine geographic districts, 10 players are selected as well as a player and coach of the year. The USBWA has selected All-District teams since the 1956-57 season, its founding year.
