AUBURN, Ala. – No. 13 Auburn fell behind in the first inning and could never make up the difference in a 15-6 loss to Austin Peay Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park.

"It's a quick flush and you have to get right back out here and try to win a series tomorrow," head coach Butch Thompson said. "We need to be interested in getting back out here and competing tomorrow."

Cooper Weiss went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first inning, his third of the season, and Ike Irish hit his team-best sixth homer of the season in the eighth inning, a two-run shot that traveled 458 feet over the visitor's bullpen.

The homers extended Auburn's season-opening homer streak to 14 games, doubling the previous record since at least 1979 to start a season.

Austin Peay (11-3) jumped out to an early lead on a three-run homer from the third batter of the game. The Governors went on to load the bases in the inning, but Carson Myers got out of the frame without further damage on a flyout to right.

Auburn (11-3) answered right back as Mason Maners hit a leadoff single and Weiss followed with a two-run homer off the videoboard in left center.

Austin Peay added a run on a solo homer in the third and increased the advantage to 5-2 on a RBI double as Auburn went to the bullpen in the fourth.

The Governors tacked on three runs in the sixth, three more in the eighth and four in the ninth, all coming on six hits, five walks and a hit batter. Seven of Austin Peay's 15 runs were unearned.

Parker Carlson was the bright spot on the mound, turning in 1.1 scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout. It was Carlson's fourth straight scoreless outing to start the season.

After Irish's two-run homer in the eighth, Auburn capped off the scoring with two runs on a sacrifice fly and wild pitch in the ninth.

The series finale between Auburn and Austin Peay is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
