NORMAN, Okla. – No. 6 Auburn holds the lead after shooting an opening round 273 (-7) at the Schooner Fall Classic on Saturday. The performance marks the second lowest team 18-hole score in program history, only behind a 271 at the SEC/ACC Challenge in 2004. Auburn holds a three stroke lead over Houston through the first 18 holes.
“A solid start for the team and a great start for Anna (Davis),” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. “The course is in excellent condition which lends itself to some good scoring. Some Oklahoma wind did provide some protection, as choosing the right club was a bit challenging. We gave a couple back on the final hole so I would like to see our team get focused on a strong finish. Lots of golf left!”
Sophomore Anna Davis holds the individual lead after firing an opening round of 6-under (64). Davis carded a bogey-free round that included three consecutive birdies on the front nine. The sophomore’s round ties the lowest 18-hole score in Auburn program history and marks the third time a Tiger has ever shot 64.
Redshirt junior Casey Weidenfeld also impressed during her season debut, firing a 2-under 68 and finishing the day just outside the top 5 in a tie for sixth place. Weidenfeld started her round with two straight birdies and made the turn with four birdies on the day.
Junior Katie Cranston also recorded a round under par on Saturday, shooting 69 (-1) after overcoming an early double-bogey on No. 3. Cranston’s round places her in a tie for ninth place on the individual leaderboard.
Redshirt junior Carys Worby provided the final counting score for the Tigers, turning in a 72 (+2), which places her in a tie for 37th individually.
Auburn will begin the second round just after 10 a.m. CT off the first tee paired with players from Houston and TCU. Live scoring of Sunday’s round will be available online at scoreboard.clippd.com.
