AUBURN, AL – A new era of Auburn softball is beginning under the direction of co-head coaches Chris and Kate Malveaux and with them are eight new Tigers on The Plains looking to help make a mark in year one.

The 2024 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, Haley Rainey joins the Tigers after a pair of seasons at Cal State Fullerton and brings veteran experience to Auburn’s young bullpen. A game changer with a competitor mentality, the Adna, Washington native brings everything to the table.

Q: How old were you when you started playing softball? What are your earliest memories of the sport?

Rainey: I was around 10 when I started playing. My earliest memory is calling time during my at bat and notifying my mom, who was in the stands, that there were geese flying in the spring in Washington. I do not hit anymore.

Q: What has been the highlight of your softball career so far?

Rainey: Beating Florida my sophomore year at Fullerton. I didn’t know that I was starting until after I warmed up and was halfway done with my lunch.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

Rainey: RELAX! Stand up for yourself better. It will be a very hard thing to learn so practice now.

Q: Why did you decide Auburn was the best fit to continue your collegiate career?

Rainey: It truly felt like home. I had so much fun on my visit, and I heard incredible things about the coaches from people in the community of softball who I am close with. (which matters a lot in a such a short amount of time!) They surpassed everything anyone had said.

Q: How have your new teammates helped you adjust since arriving on campus?

Rainey: Playing pickleball and going to team functions have been great!

Q: What makes Auburn softball special?

Rainey: Every single person here wants to be here and believe in what we are trying to do!

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

Rainey: I CANNOT drink caffeine! Everything else is fine, but if I drink any type of caffeine on gameday my hands will shake during the first four innings – no matter what.

Q: What’s your major? What are your plans following your playing career?

Rainey: I am majoring in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in hydrogeology, psychology and leadership. I plan on getting my master’s degree in adult education and move from there into coaching, preferably in college but I could also do high school. I also want to try and play professionally if the opportunity presents itself.

Q: What’s one word to describe yourself on the field and one word to describe yourself off the field?

Rainey: On the field would be passionate because I truly love what I am doing. Off the field, I would say I am eclectic. I have lots of very different hobbies, experiences and interests.

It truly felt like home. I had so much fun on my visit, and I heard incredible things about the coaches from people in the community of softball who I am close with. They surpassed everything anyone had said.

Q: What’s your jersey number? Does it have any special meaning?

Rainey: I am wearing No. 8. This was my number at Fullerton. At that point, it was just an even number that the jersey fit me. My friend pointed out to me that it also represents my birthday. I did not connect the two on my own.

Q: What HAS to be on your pregame playlist?

Rainey: Wait For It from Hamilton.

Q: If you could trade places with a coach for a day, who would you pick?

Rainey: In a real way, I would trade with coach Ryker (Chason). I love the bullpen, and he has a job that I want to do in the future. Taking that variable out, I think it would be interesting to be coach Chris (Malveaux). He is bald, and I think for a day that could be very educational.

Q: What uniform combo are you most looking forward to wearing?

Rainey: Anything that says Auburn on it!

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Rainey: I would want to fly. I think it would be a lot of fun and feel like I could scare the heck out of my friends.

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Rainey: Pho. Like real Vietnamese pho.

Q: How is Auburn different from your hometown?

Rainey: Besides being like 2,000 miles away, Auburn is a lot bigger.

Q: What’s one movie you can quote word for word?

Rainey: Pride and Prejudice (2005).

Q: Describe your perfect slice of pizza…

Rainey: Easy – Costco pizza.

Q: Do you have any hidden hobbies or talents?

Rainey: I can crochet and drive a manual transmission car.
