WEST POINT, Miss. – Auburn finished the opening round of The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi on Monday. The team carded a 1-over 289 in round one and is in fourth place, 11 strokes behind tournament leader Vanderbilt. Junior Katie Cranston led the Tigers on Monday with a 68 (-4).
“Katie [Cranston] played beautiful golf today,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. “She had great control with her game due to clear decision making. Anna Davis played a solid round but just missed birdie opportunities. As a whole, we can clean up some decision making and execution. We clean those things up, even halfway, we can get back into contention.”
Cranston has now fired back-to-back rounds of 68 dating back to the Tigers’ last event, the Illini Women’s Invitational. Her round featured five birdies including the par-3 17th hole. The Auburn sophomore is tied for second place on the leaderboard and seven shots behind Avery Weed of Mississippi State, the individual leader.
Sophomore Anna Davis fired a 72 (E) on Monday with a couple of birdies and is tied for 16th place individually through 18 holes. Freshman Balma Dávalos Guaita’s round was highlighted by an eagle on No. 15 at Old Waverly Golf Club, a 499 yard par-5. The eagle marked the team’s first of the season. The freshman recorded a 2-over 74 and is in a tie for 29th place.
Auburn’s final counting score came from redshirt junior Casey Weidenfeld, who carded a 75 in round one (+3).
Freshman Anne Fernandez, who is competing in the event as an individual, posted a 1-over 73 in her collegiate debut on Monday in a round that included three birdies.
Auburn will begin round two of The Ally on Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. CT on the first tee paired with players from Louisiana-Monroe and Western Kentucky. Live scoring of the tournament will be available online at scoreboard.clippd.com.
