AUBURN, AL – A new era of Auburn softball is beginning under the direction of co-head coaches Chris and Kate Malveaux and with them are eight new Tigers on The Plains looking to help make a mark in year one.

An Alabama native and one of the newest faces to the pitching staff, Blayne Godfrey joins the program after a highly decorated prep career. From Danville, the right-handed pitcher was a five-time all-state honoree and recently won the PGF National Championship with the Birmingham Thunderbolts.

Q: How old were you when you started playing softball? What are some of your earliest memories of the sport?

Godfrey: I was nine when I started playing. My first softball team was the recreation softball team for my school. I remember making the all-star team my first year. After that, I found out that I wanted to pitch.

Q: Who has influenced your softball career the most?

Godfrey: My grandparents have influenced my softball career the most because of how hard they have pushed me and never stopped believing in me no matter what.

Q: What has been the highlight of your softball career so far?

Godfrey: The highlight of my career so far was hitting the walk-off home run and pitching an 11-inning shutout in the same high school game. Also, I won the PGF National Championship with my travel ball team over the summer.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

Godfrey: I would tell my younger self to never stop working for what you want. Believe in yourself and trust the process. You will overcome obstacles all throughout your life. What you do in your hardships is what sets you apart.

Q: Is there any athlete that you try to model your game after?

Godfrey: I really liked watching Kelly Barnhill growing up.

Q: Why did you decide to commit to Auburn?

Godfrey: I fell in love with the family feel of Auburn. Everybody was so welcoming. Auburn felt like home.

Q: How have your new teammates helped you adjust since arriving on campus?

Godfrey: They have helped me adjust to all the different aspects of college. We had team meals, spent time together and played pickleball. They are there to answer any questions I may have.

Q: How would you describe the coaching staff at Auburn?

Godfrey: They are amazing. They truly care about us as individuals and not just athletes. I am so thankful to play under a coaching staff that devotes so much time into us so that we can reach our goals.

Q: What makes Auburn softball special?

Godfrey: My mom was an Auburn fan before she passed. For that reason, I play for her. She would love to see who I have become and what my future holds.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

Godfrey: I can’t say! It’s bad luck.

Q: What’s your major? What are your plans following your playing career?

Godfrey: My major is exercise science. I plan to become a pediatric physical therapist and possibly own my own business one day.

Q: What’s one word to describe yourself off the field and one word to describe yourself off the field?

Godfrey: On the field would be competitive. Off the field would be passionate.

I am super excited to be part of something so special at Auburn. Looking forward to a great season. War Eagle!

Godfrey: I’m wearing No. 19. I’ve had it ever since I started playing.

Q: What HAS to be on your pregame playlist?

Godfrey: Maria by Justin Bieber.

Q: If you could trade places with a coach for a day, who would you pick and why?

Godfrey: Ryker – so I can be good at everything. Pitching, catching – you name it.

Q: What uniform combo are you most looking forward to wearing?

Godfrey: Pinstripes.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Godfrey: I would want to fly because I could travel anywhere I wanted.

Godfrey: Christmas because it is the only time I get to see all my family together.

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Godfrey: Cheesecake Factory’s five-cheese pasta.

Q: If you were stranded on an island, what three teammates would you want with you?

Godfrey: Nelia (Peralta). She would keep everybody chill and not care. Malayna (Tamborra). We would probably just enjoy the time on the island tanning and listening to music. Skylar (Elkins). She’d be the one to actually find a way off.

Q: How is Auburn different from your hometown?

Godfrey: My hometown is very small with a country lifestyle.
