BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn senior All-American and National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome (Plant City, Fla.) was honored as SEC Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.
With his consistent and dominant play, the 6-foot-10 forward/center led the then No. 11-ranked Tigers to a 2-0 season-opening week of college basketball. He averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in wins over three-time America East Conference champion Vermont (W, 94-43) on Nov. 6 at Neville Arena and No. 4-ranked Houston (W, 74-69) in the Mattress Firm Battleground 2k24 tournament on Nov. 9 in Houston, Texas.
Broome poured in 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and five blocked shots against the Cougars to earn tournament MVP honors. It marked the Tigers’ highest-ranked opponent win in regular-season, non-conference play in program history.
Broome is currently on a 28-game double-digit scoring streak including a 12-point, 7-rebound performance versus the Catamounts in the team’s season opener. It marks his second career SEC weekly honor.
The Tigers moved up six spots to No. 5 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
