PENSACOLA, Fla. — Auburn soccer kickstarts postseason play with an SEC Tournament first round match up versus LSU Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. CT from the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Florida.
Six-seeded Auburn (12-2-4) faces 11-seed LSU (8-7-3) in the second match of the day live on the SEC Network. Marion Crowder and Alex Perlman have the call.
“The key going into the postseason is just being us,” Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. “We’ve got to get back to playing through each other, using our combination play and fast attacking play. Every team we face from here on out is going to be a great team. As long as we stay true to us, we can compete with whoever comes our way.”
As customary with postseason competition, overtime now returns to the pitch. If two teams stand tied after 90 minutes of regulation, a pair of 10-minute overtime periods will ensue. Golden goal will be in effect, meaning the first team to score in extra time will end the match. If no winner has been decided in overtime, a penalty kick shootout will determine the advancing squad.
Auburn and LSU met earlier this season in a face-off in Baton Rouge on Oct. 4, which ended in a 4-0 Orange & Blue victory. Auburn surrendered just four shots in the contest, only one of which was placed on target. It was stuffed by goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska.
Auburn’s goals were scored by Olivia Woodson, Mallory Mooney, Carly Thatcher and LJ Knox. Thatcher, Woodson, Dylan Driver and Anna Haddock were all credited with assists.
The Tigers have not lost to the Bayou Bengals since 2010, and they own a streak of 16 undefeated meetings in a row, including 12 victories. Auburn’s back line has not conceded a goal to LSU since 2016.
Since the 2016 meeting, Auburn has outscored LSU 11-0.
Four previous meetings between the sides have come at the SEC Tournament. The series stands tied at 2-2-1. Auburn lost a penalty kick shootout to LSU in 2007, falling 4-2.
At the SEC Tournament, Auburn stands 16-25-5 all-time. Last season, the Tigers opened the 2023 tournament with a 2-1 win versus Tennessee before falling to Arkansas 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
Auburn’s lone tournament crown came in 2011. The path to victory consisted of a 3-0 win over LSU, a 2-0 win over Tennessee and a 3-2 championship match defeat of Florida.
The advancing team from the Auburn/LSU match will face three-seed Texas in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. CT. The tournament championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m. CT
