BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following successful performances at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships last Friday in Bryan-College Station, Texas, three Tigers have earned all-SEC honors, the conference office announced Monday.
Senior Ryan Kinnane was named to the men’s second team, while freshman Nickson Chebii earned men’s second team as well as all-freshman honors. Freshman Brenda Jepchirchir was named to the women’s second team and the women’s all-freshman team.
Making his SEC championships debut, Chebii ran his best race of the season placing ninth overall, crossing the 8k finish line in 22:44.90. His finish was the best by an Auburn freshman since Girma Mesecho won the SEC title in 2009.
Competing in his final SEC cross country meet, Kinnane delivered the best 8k time of his collegiate career to finish 14th (23:02.30). For the third consecutive year, he was named to the all-SEC team, something that hadn’t been accomplished since Felix Kiboiywo from 2007-09. The week prior, Kinnane was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third year in a row.
Jepchirchir put together her best 6k race with a fifth-place finish as she crossed in 19:13.60. Jepchirchir was the first freshman to complete to course, and her showing was the best from an Auburn freshman woman since 2015 when Brend Kigen was fourth.
The top seven finishers from each gender make up the first team. The second team consists of the next seven finishers (8-14), and finishers 15-21 make up the third team. This is the first time that an All-SEC third team has been recognized. The top seven freshman finishers in each race earn All-Freshman honors.
