AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn’s Syriah Daniels has been named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week for women’s basketball, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Daniels, a 6-0 guard from Auburn, made the most of her first career start with a career-high 14 points in Sunday’s win over UAB. Thrust into the starting lineup unexpectedly after injuries left the Tigers with just eight available players, she hit four of her first five shot attempts to help Auburn to an early lead.

She then played a career-high 30 minutes – having averaged just 13 minutes per game this season – while making numerous key plays down the stretch to help the shorthanded Tigers secure the come-from-behind victory.

Her 14 points were the most scored by an Auburn freshman making her first career start since the 2009-10 season.

It’s the first weekly conference honor for Daniels and the first of the season for Auburn.

Daniels and the Tigers have this week off for final exams, and they will return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 18, with a road game at Louisiana-Lafayette.
