BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third time this season, Auburn All-American and National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome (Plant City, Fla.) was honored as co-Southeastern Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
The 6-foot-10, 240-pound senior big man shared the weekly honor with Kentucky guard Lamont Butler.
Broome led the No. 2-ranked Tigers to a 91-53 rout of Ohio State as part of Holiday Hoopsgiving on Dec. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. He recorded a game-high 21 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to go with six assists, three blocks, zero turnovers and one steal in only 26 minutes of play against the Buckeyes.
Broome became the first Auburn player to record a 20-point, 20-rebound game since Kelvin Ardister had 22 points and 20 rebounds versus Tennessee on Jan. 4, 1989. He is currently on a nation-leading 36-game double-digit scoring streak. Broome turned in a double-double in the first half for the third time this season with 17 points and 14 rebounds to go with four assists, one block and one steal, his 67th career double-double. It was his first career 20-20 game.
With his impressive stat line versus Ohio State, Broome was the first NCAA Division I player in the past 25 years to have at least 20 points, at least 20 rebounds and at least five assists with zero turnovers in the same game. There have now been three individual performances of at least 20 points, at least 15 rebounds and at least five assists in D-I games so far this season – all by Broome.
