MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 21 Women’s golf completed its second round of competition at the Moon Golf Invitational at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Florida, on Monday. Freshman Balma Dávalos remains in the individual top 10 as the Tigers finished Monday’s round in a tie for eighth place at 15-over (591) as a team.
“So much good golf on the front nine and then the bogeys kept coming at the finish,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. “Struggling a bit with the four and five spots. Need to get everyone playing well at the same time tomorrow to see if we can jump up in the leaderboard.”
Auburn followed its opening round 296 (+7) on Sunday with a second round 297 (+8). The Tigers are 18 strokes back of the tournament leader, Florida State, and are leading No. 9 Northwestern by two shots and No. 10 Virginia by three shots.
Dávalos’ round of 1-over (73) featured three birdies and her 36-hole total of 144 (E) places her in a tie for eighth place. The Auburn freshman will begin the final round four strokes behind the individual leader, Lottie Woad of Florida State.
Redshirt junior Carys Worby, who is competing as an individual, was one of just 14 players in the field to record a round under par on Monday. Worby picked up birdies on No. 2, No. 7, No. 11 and No. 12 to record a round of 2-under (70). The impressive round moved Worby up 32 spots on the individual leaderboard from the end of round one to a tie for 15th place at 2-over for the event (146).
Sophomore Anna Davis bounced back from an uncharacteristic opening round with a 72 (E) on Monday. Davis stayed steady in round two, carding 16 pars. She is now in a tie for 21st individually at 3-over for the tournament (147). Her teammate, Katie Cranston, is also tied for 21st place through two rounds after shooting a 74 (+2) in her second round.
Freshman Anne Fernandez and redshirt junior Casey Weidenfeld both carded rounds of 76 (+4) in round two, which counted as the final team score. Fernandez is in 66th individually at 9-over (153) while Weidenfeld is in a tie for 74th at 12-over (156) after bouncing back from a difficult opening round.
Auburn will play the final round of the event on Tuesday. Live scoring of the tournament’s final round will be available online at scoreboard.clippd.com.
