AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn’s Alex Frusina has been awarded SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Wednesday. Frusina picked up the honor after earning two ranked singles wins and clinched a doubles point in a tiebreaker against Texas A&M during the Tigers’ Texas swing over the weekend.

On Thursday night, Frusina and doubles partner Joey Phillips went back-and-forth in their match with JC Roddick and Lathan Skrobarcek, which eventually went into a tiebreaker. Frusina and Phillips jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the breaker before claiming it to win the doubles point for the Tigers.

At the No. 2 singles position, Roddick, who is ranked No. 45 in singles nationally, took an early lead over Frusina before claiming the first set 6-1. Frusina then won a crucial deciding point in a serve game to win the second set and force a third. In the decisive third set, Frusina claimed an early break and a 3-1 lead before Roddick closed the gap to 4-3. The Auburn freshman then won the next two games to win the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 which tied the team score at two.

On Sunday, Frusina jumped out to a 4-1 lead in his opening set against No. 13 Sebastian Gorzny before eventually winning it 6-4. The second set between Frusina and Gorzny was close, with Gorzny taking a 5-4 lead late in the set. With the set tied at five, Frusina earned a crucial break and held in the next game to win the match in straight sets.

The win improved the Auburn freshman’s overall singles record to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in dual matches. The win over Gorzny also marked Frusina’s highest ranked singles victory of the season.

Auburn has now claimed four weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference this season. Frusina was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5, Mats Bredschneijder earned the same honor on Feb. 19 and Nicholas Heng was tabbed SEC Player of the Week on March 5.

Frusina and the Tigers will be back in action for a home doubleheader on Thursday. Auburn will face No. 18 Oklahoma at noon CT and Belmont at 5 p.m. CT at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn.
