MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Senior Brendan Valdes shot a masterful 5-under 67 Sunday at The Dunes Club to become Auburn's new program record-holder with the 69th subpar round of his career.
Valdes led the Tigers in Sunday's opener at the General Hackler Championship, pushing the team to a four-shot lead after 18 holes. No. 1 Auburn stands tall at 10-under 278. In second is No. 19 Duke at 7-under 281.
Sophomores Cayden Pope and Josiah Gilbert also went sub-70, carding a pair of 69s (-3). They join Valdes in the tournament's top 10.
The trio of sophomore Jackson Koivun and seniors Carson Bacha and Ryan Eshleman remains within striking distance of the lead at 1-under 71.
