AIKEN, S.C.- Auburn finished its third and final match of the Old Barnwell Derby Match Play on Tuesday, falling to Ole Miss by a 3-2-0 score at Old Barnwell Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina.
“A lot of close matches all three rounds and we just couldn’t seem to get a break to get over the edge,” said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. “Frustrating for sure, but not to be discouraged. We were in every singles match this week and kept fighting. The fighting spirit will pay off down the road.”
Auburn junior Katie Cranston looked impressive in her match, defeating Nicole Gal 4&2. After beginning on No. 10, Gal took a 1-up lead through No. 15, but Cranston won three of the next five holes to take a 2-up lead. After the two traded wins early on the front nine, the Auburn junior won two consecutive holes on No. 6 and No. 7 to clinch the match win.
Carys Worby also picked up a match win on Tuesday, defeating Filippa Sundquist in extra holes. Worby took an early lead on the first hole before Sundquist took the lead back on the second nine. Trailing 2-down through No. 6, Worby carded wins on No. 7 and No. 9 to force the match to an extra hole. The Auburn redshirt junior won the 19th hole to claim the 1-up victory.
Two other matches reached the final hole of the day, as Ole Miss’ Kajsalotta Svarvar defeated Anna Davis 2-up and Caitlyn Macnab defeated Rachel Gourley with a win on No. 9. Sophie Linder handed Auburn’s Balma Dávalos her first loss of the event by a 3&1 score.
Up next, Auburn will compete in its final regular season tournament of the season at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The event will be played March 24-25.
