ATLANTA – Auburn junior Megan Hague broke the school record in women’s shot put Friday with a 17.70m throw, highlighting a strong showing for the track & field team at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta at the George C. Griffin Track.
Competing in the first meet of the outdoor season, the Tigers took home nine event wins, nine top 10 performances and 26 collegiate personal bests, but it was the throws squad that really made heads turn.
Of the nine event wins, the throwing squad contributed five.
Hague competed in the second flight of shot put, and her first throw of 15.75m was good enough for first place. The Niceville, Florida native’s second throw cemented her spot at the top of Auburn’s shot put list (17.70m).
Joining Hague on the winner’s podium for the throws were seniors Kyle Brown and Maura Huwalt and juniors Matthew Rueff and Seth Allen.
Competing in her third outdoor season, Huwalt took gold in discus throw. Freshman Camryn Massey took second (51.41m) and senior Adrienne Adams claimed bronze (51.01m) to round out the sweep for the women in the event.
Massey also competed in shot put. She finished the event second overall claiming the ninth furthest throw on the Auburn Top 10 List (15.28m).
On the men’s side, Brown had a toss of 63.29m in hammer throw to earn first place. Senior Kyle Moison finished just behind Brown in second place (62.51m) and junior John Lenord’s mark of 61.40m was good enough for fourth.
Rueff won the men’s shot put with a strong mark of 18.20m.
Allen had the furthest throw of the day in discus (58.84), claiming the fifth furthest distance on the Auburn Top 10 List.
On the sprints side, senior Tyler Davis had an extremely successful debut for the Tigers. He finished first in the 100m (10.46) and 200m (21.19).
With a time of 53.87 in the 400m, sophomore Deborah Oke brought home gold in the event. Her time is No. 2 in the SEC.
Making his outdoor debut, freshman Asande Mthembu’s mark of 6.80m was good enough for fourth in long jump.
Three pole vaulters for the Tigers had top-10 finishes. Alyssa Quinones Mixon kickstarted her outdoor season with a first-place finish in the event (4.10m). Rhiannon Held finished third (3.85m), and competing in her first outdoor meet, freshman Ansley Murphy finished eighth (3.55m). Murphy earned a spot on Auburn’s Top 10 List, taking No. 8.
For the distance women, Hallie Porterfield had a major PR in the 5000m. She finished second overall with a time of 16:45.80, shaving nearly 50 seconds off her previous best (17:33.31). Porterfield was closely followed by sophomore Audrey Dunn who also delivered a collegiate best (16:48.60), finishing fourth and senior Hannah Thuss claimed eighth (17:19.87).
Sophomore Max Hardin had the fastest time of the day in the 800m, crossing the line in 1:50.55. Senior Benson Atkins had a PR in the race (1:58.38).
