AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn track & field looks to continue its strong start to the outdoor season as the Tigers compete in the Terry Long FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida March 27-28 at the Mike Long Track. The men’s hammer will start Thursday at 2 p.m. CT and the women’s javelin will start Friday at 9 a.m. CT.
The Orange & Blue looks to continue the positive momentum after a successful season opener in Atlanta at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, where the team put up nine event wins.
Highlighting the team’s showing were the throws group from the men and women. The throwing squad contributed five of the event wins.
“We had some really solid performances,” Auburn track & field head coach Leroy Burrell said. “Megan Hague broke the school record in shot put, and we’re really excited about that. It goes well for her ability to contribute to the ultimate goa,l and that is where we place at nationals at the end of the season.”
Junior Hague broke the school record in shot put with a mark of 17.70m to also claim an event win. The Niceville, Florida native holds the No. 1 mark in the SEC and No. 2 in the nation.
Seniors Kyle Brown and Maura Huwalt and juniors Matthew Rueff and Seth Allen also brought home gold in their respective events.
Huwalt led the women’s sweep in discus throw (54.73m). Freshman Camryn Massey took silver (51.41m) and senior Adrienne Adams finished third (51.01m).
In discus for the men, Allen had the furthest throw of the day. His mark of 58.84 was the fifth furthest throw on the Auburn Top 10 List.
The sprinters for Auburn also had a good showing. Sophomore Deborah Oke ran the second fastest time in the conference in the 400m to finish first overall (53.87).
Making his debut for the Tigers, senior Tyler Davis finished first in the 100m (10.46) and 200m (21.19).
Junior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon opened her outdoor season with a win in women’s pole vault (4.10m). Senior Rhiannon Held claimed bronze after clearing 3.85m.
Leading the distance crew for the women this past weekend was junior Hallie Porterfield. Porterfield clocked a collegiate best time of 16:45.80 in the women’s 5000m to finish second. Sophomore Audrey Dunn and senior Hannah Thuss finished fourth and eighth, respectively, with times of 16:48.60 and 17:19.87.
On the men’s side, sophomore Max Hardin was the first to cross the 800m finish line in 1:50.55.
The team is looking to integrate more athletes into the mix this week, including jumper Aaron Davis. The Humble, Texas native is looking to get back on the runway and make his outdoor debut for the Tigers.
It is going to be a weekend full of competition as the men and women compete against Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Notre Dame and host Florida State.
