AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn’s Hamza Nasridinov, Joey Phillips, Jake Kennedy and Thomas Kennedy wrapped up the Tigers’ home fall tournament, the Battle on The Plains, on Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
“It was a great weekend of tennis with a lot of highly competitive singles and doubles matches,” Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said. “We need to continue to concentrate on being offensive and taking time away from our opponents, thus allowing us to finish points more often at the net. We’ll take a lot of the specifics from this weekend and get back to work to see what we can implement on such a short week before regionals.”
Phillips teamed up with Thomas Kennedy, while Nasridinov paired with Jake Kennedy in the dual-style tournament.
Phillips and Thomas Kennedy earned a pair of doubles wins during the event, defeating Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles of North Alabama and Charlie Swaine and Cole Henceroth of South Carolina.
The doubles team of Nasridinov and Jake Kennedy also topped Swaine and Henceroth in the final round, 6-4. The Auburn duo added a 6-3 victory over Lachlan Brain and Satoru of North Alabama in round two and a 6-1 win against Ondrej Valek and Tomas Tischner of UAB in round three.
In singles, Nasridinov went a perfect 4-0 over the three-day event, posting straight-set wins against Samford’s Sandeep Mohandoss, North Alabama’s Lachlan Brain and UAB’s Ondrej Valek, along with a three-set victory over Swaine of South Carolina.
Phillips earned two singles wins on the weekend against Nemanja Stefanovic of Mercer and Altur of North Alabama. Thomas Kennedy closed his tournament with a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 6-7 (3), [11-9] win over Tischner of UAB to finish on a high note.
Up next, Auburn will have representatives at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, set for Oct. 9-14 at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Two singles bids and one doubles bid to the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship will be awarded through the event.
