AUBURN, Ala — In front of a season-high crowd of nearly 1,700 Auburn faithful, Auburn soccer (5-5-5,1-3-4) shut down one of the league’s leading offenses and found another goal from senior Erin Flurey to draw 1-1 with Oklahoma (9-3-4, 2-3-3) Thursday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
“We wanted three points. We kind of needed three points, but we’ll have to take one tonight,” head coach James Armstrong said. “I thought we played really, really well for about 75 minutes, but unfortunately, we didn’t have the punch for the final 15 minutes. Overall, there were a lot of really good performances tonight.”
Auburn’s defense limited the Sooners to just six chances, and only two on target, a season low. Oklahoma was held shotless for 58:16, until Kayla Keefer broke through with a goal on her team’s first shot of the match.
Less than five minutes later, Auburn was granted its magic chance, a penalty kick, thanks to a foul drawn in the box from junior Olivia Woodson. Flurey stepped up to the spot and buried her NCAA-leading fifth penalty goal of the season. She surpasses Bri Folds’ single-season record of four PK goals from 2018.
Flurey now has 11 goals this season and is a jaw-dropping nine-for-nine from the penalty spot in her career.
Responsible for shutting down an explosive Oklahoma attack were seniors Taylor Chism, Hayden Colson and Erin Houston, junior Jordyn Crosby, and freshmen Gracie Brown and Lily Devereaux. All six women saw 85+ minutes in the match to lead the team.
Overall, Auburn generated 11 chances on the night, four of which found the face of goal. Flurey and Colson were the lone Tigers players with multiple looks.
Up next, Auburn treks to Athens, Georgia for a Sunday afternoon clash with the No. 19 Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for Sunday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
