PENSACOLA, Fla. – Auburn soccer is set to make its 30th SEC Tournament appearance when it faces LSU in the opening round of the conference knockouts this Sunday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. CT at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Florida.
“LSU are the red-hot team right now, particularly from an attacking standpoint,” Auburn head coach James Armstrong said. “They’ve hit some momentum since playing us. Them beating us here gives us a little bit of fuel to want to repay the favor down at the beach. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to have a rematch and hopefully earn a result against a high RPI opponent.”
The return of postseason marks the return of overtime. If teams are squared through the regulation 90 minutes, two 10-minute overtime periods ensue. The golden goal rule will be in effect, meaning when one team scores in overtime, the match is over. If teams remain deadlocked following overtime, the match will be recorded as a draw, and a penalty kick shootout will determine the advancing team.
Every match of the 2025 SEC Soccer Tournament will be broadcast on the SEC Network. Marion Crowder and Alex Perlman have the call for Sunday’s clash of the Tigers.
AUBURN NOTABLES
Auburn is 16-26-5 at the SEC Tournament all-time. Its last win at the event came in 2023, when it beat Tennessee 2-1 in the opening round.
With 30 SEC Tournament appearances, Auburn leads the league. Florida ranks second with 27. The Tigers’ longest streak of making the tournament spanned 21 years, from 2001-2021.
Auburn has found itself in the tournament title match five times: 1994, 2001, 2005, 2011 and 2012. The Tigers captured their first and so far, only tournament championship in 2011. They opened with a 1-0 win over LSU, followed by a 2-0 win over Tennessee in the semifinals and a 3-2 win against Florida in the final. Katy Frierson was named 2011 Tournament MVP after netting two goals and assisting on the other in the title match.
When playing extra time, Auburn has advanced more times than not. The Tigers are 8-5 when a match exceeds regulation, including a 3-2 record in penalties.
Earlier this week, three Tigers were voted to All-SEC teams by the league’s head coaches. Defensive midfielder Hayden Colson earned First Team honors, attacking midfielder Erin Flurey earned Third Team, and center back Lily Devereaux was named to the All-Freshman Team.
SCOUTING LSU
Since their defeat of Auburn on The Plains, Sian Hudson’s Tigers are flying high and riding a seven-match unbeaten streak. They capped the regular season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Florida to clinch the No. 5 seed, their best finish in Hudson’s six-year tenure.
Five members of the LSU soccer team earned All-SEC honors. Forward Ava Galligan earned First Team, midfielder Ida Hermannsdottir and defender Sydney Cheesman earned Second Team, and defender Jazmin Ferguson and forward Sariyah Bailey earned Third Team. Bailey was also named to the All-Freshman team. Cheesman, Galligan and Bailey were responsible for the three goals scored on Auburn earlier this season.
Auburn is 2-3-1 versus the Bayou Bengals when meeting in the conference tournament. Both teams met in the opening round last fall, when LSU upset Auburn 2-1.
