AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday.
In his first start, the left-hander tied Cam Newton and Carnell Williams’ program record by accounting for six touchdowns in Auburn’s 62-17 win over Mercer on Saturday.
Knight rushed for four touchdowns and passed for two more against the Bears.
“It was fun,” Knight said. “It was a blessing. We had a great gameplan. We practiced good all week. It just came down to players making plays, great blocks, great blocking downfield.”
Knight completed 15 of 20 passes for 239 yards and rushed nine times for 162 yards, accounting for 401 of Auburn’s 547 yards of total offense.
On the game’s first play, Knight tied Williams by scoring the fastest touchdown in Auburn history, needing 15 seconds to race 75 yards down the sideline after seeing his receivers covered.
Knight added three more rushing touchdowns in the first half, then threw his first touchdown pass, a 10-yarder to Cam Coleman with three seconds left in the half. In the second half, Knight produced his sixth touchdown, a 91-yard pass to Malcolm Simmons in the third quarter.
Auburn hosts No. 10 Alabama Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Iron Bowl.
