AUBURN, Ala. – While college basketball rosters have gotten older in the transfer portal era, Auburn freshmen Sebastian Williams-Adams and Simon Walker are bucking that trend.
Williams-Adams, a 6-8 forward from Houston, played at least 20 minutes in each of Auburn’s nonconference games, averaging 7.2 points per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.
“Off the court, it’s gone smoothly,” Williams-Adams said of his transition from high school to Division-I. “On the court, I’m extremely grateful for everybody having my back, my coaches, my teammates and my family.”
Auburn’s preseason game against Oklahoma State Oct. 15 served as Williams-Adams’ welcome to big-time college hoops. After one rotation, he was gasping for air.
“I knew there were going to be some difficulties adjusting to the speed of college basketball,” Williams-Adams said. “I felt more exhausted than I’ve ever felt. Skill-wise, I feel I’ve gotten a little bit better. I’m starting to learn the ins and outs of college basketball, some of the things you can get away with and things you can’t get away with.”
Auburn’s robust nonconference schedule, with four top 10 opponents, prepared Williams-Adams for the Southeastern Conference.
“It’s been good,” he said. “It’s exciting because every time you step out on the court you’re facing a top 25 team or a team picked to win their conference. It’s been a lot of fun. We’re going to keep battling throughout SEC play.”
