MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 8 Auburn women’s golf earned a team victory on Tuesday at the Moon Golf Invitational at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Florida. The Tigers carded a 7-under 857 to win the event by three strokes over second-place No. 6 Texas A&M. Auburn sophomore Molly Brown Davidson finished as the individual runner-up at the event, shooting 213 (-3).
“Such a solid round of team golf,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the win. “The girls were hungry to win The Moon Golf Invitational because of all of the support that Anne and Dan Moon have shown our program and Auburn Athletics. Very proud of every single girl on our roster for working and pushing each other every day.
“We dedicate this win to Rachel Gourley and Brendan Valdes, to know that we are behind them in Brendan’s cancer fight.”
The victory marks Auburn’s fourth of the season, its most since winning four events during the 2008-09 season. Auburn entered Tuesday’s final round trailing the Aggies by three strokes, but took the lead halfway through round three and held the lead through the remainder of the day. Auburn defeated 11 teams ranked inside the SCOREBOARD top 25 and four teams ranked inside the top 10.
Davidson followed up an opening round 70 (-2) with a 2-over 74 on Monday. She began the final round hot, with two birdies in her first three holes. The Auburn sophomore then made the turn at 1-under before recording back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. She finished the round at 3-under (69) and as the individual runner-up. The finish marks the best of the season for Davidson and her second consecutive top five.
